This project offers a unique solution for adding a dwelling unit into a crawl space without increasing the property’s overall building footprint. The owners loved their neighborhood, and rather than move when in need of a larger living space, instead opted to lift their 1890s home and create full-height basement below.
Daylight was a major design consideration in this addition, which was maximized by an open floor plan, generous windows, and fully-glazed doors throughout (frosted glass at bedrooms and restroom). Along with the 800 square foot ADU, the basement addition also included a winder staircase to a den and root cellar for the main residence.
