HARKA Headquarters

Bringing a sustainably-minded high-performance renovation to life.

AFTER

At Harka Architecture we believe that innovative design has the power to uplift, by inspiring a better world and informing a better life. Harka is committed to uplifting in all that we do. This project is a testament to Harka’s values and a commitment to uplifting and preserving a piece of Montavilla’s neighborhood.

This 600sf art deco building in the Montavilla neighborhood was originally designed as a dentist office in 1940. The building has served many purposes over the past 80 years, and has been mainly food service since the 1980s.

The roof has been re-framed with 14" TJIs and insulated with a thick blanket of cellulose as an alternative to using toxic materials with high carbon emissions such as spray foam and XPS rigid insulation.

A smart air barrier has been installed over the existing 2x6 ceiling in order to maintain a utility cavity for electrical and mechanical. The air barrier will be continued on the back side of the wall and floor sheathing.

The north wall began as painted plywood siding with evidence of water and termite damage. The damage was mitigated and an overhang along with new waterproofing membrane were added to prevent any future water infiltration.

BEFORE

All of the existing lumber in the demo was salvaged and used for the new floor plan and roof. All required new lumber is sustainably harvested, certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), and was provided by Sustainable Northwest Wood.

The walls were filled with dense-pack cellulose insulation and a layer of carbon sequestering Gutex Multitherm boards, provided by 475, was added on the interior face for added insulation and a thermal break.

We used this project as a way to test high-performance strategies and low-carbon emitting materials. We now use this as a not only a showroom for our clients, but as a teaching tool for contractors and a testament to our mission towards low-carbon architecture.

We have also been highlighted in the Montavilla News and you can read the full story here.
