Kenton Residence

Portland, OR

Under Construction

A new residence suitable for a pair of talented DIYers and metalworkers, this Portland home is curated to suit their unique style. The project offers small and carefully placed openings to the street while providing expansive views of the property to the back. The solar heat gain from the south warms the floor slab through the large open floor plan in the winter while a substantial overhang and minimal steel plate awnings keep out the high summer sun. The exterior resembles the existing workshop on the property, with modern elements added. This modest design, at 1680 SF, offers a very flexible and open floor plan, designed to adapt as the occupants’ needs change.

The 2nd floor has been designed around two large salvaged steel support beams. The interior design showcases the raw building elements with a minimalist industrial feel. The stair is constructed of steel stringers, open wood treads, and steel railings. Exterior walls will be constructed with continuous insulation and a rainscreen offering a highly functional, thermally broken wrap. The roof design accommodates a generous PV solar array while also incorporating an ERV, heat pump water heater, and multi-zone ductless mini-split. This house is Net Zero Ready.

Minimalist Industrial Sustainability.
