Middle-housing project: A single family house and two ADUs

BEFORE

This multi-generational project in the heart of Sellwood aims to increase density within a small lot while maintaining the single-family fabric of the neighborhood. The existing home was dismantled and much of the wood salvaged and used on the new structures.

This home is designed for the evolution of a generational family. A light-filled basement apartment is provided with an accessible ramp and south facing patio. The 2 bedroom apartment sits over a garage and common space that spills into the shared yard.

The second level ADU is provided with a spacious entry on the ground floor. The entry of the main home has space for an office with shelves made from the wood salvaged from original house. The original saw blade marks from the 1890s were carefully cleaned and put on display in the shared common room.

Careful placement of windows allows for mirrors while offering a curated view of the neighborhood and bringing in lots of light.

An open floor plan and high ceilings make the ADU feel larger than it really is.

The two-bedroom ADU, common space, and garage help hug the common outdoor space at the rear of the primary home.
