Cannabros - Albany

The Building is the Sign
The view from the street
The design for this marijuana store right off of Pacific Highway needed to catch people’s attention as they come into town. We achieved this by encasing the glass front of the store with a wooden screen. This provides a pleasing light, brand recognition, and entices people in. After dark, the shop turns into a jewel box shining from the inside through the vertical wooden slats, invoking the warm comfort and guidance of a lamp.

Brand Recognition for Cannabros
This bold style has since become the signature look for Cannabros. They use it at all of their new locations and keep coming back to us for more.
Interlocking forms reflect and respond to the pace on either side. Where speeds are greater, the form is necessarily bigger and more dramatic. The drama of the front meets the lower profile and the slower pace of the grid in the back.
This dispensary is designed to be seen at the point where high speed-traffic transitions to a slower surface-street pace. The building opens up to the street, inviting you to stop in and gather provisions before reintegrating into the city grid.

Wooden slats
Wood finished ceiling comes out past the curtain wall to create an eave and meet the wood slats. This creates a comfortable walkway to the entrance, encased in wood and dappled light.
Wooden slats are used to selectively shield the western and southern sun when it is low and at its most intense.
The client originally wanted to stain the concrete floor. We encouraged a more restrained approach that would be rewarding at certain times of the day.
The wood screen throws a unique pattern across the floor depending on the time of day and year.
Wood texture and dappled light are both biophilic elements that are pleasing and calming.
Interior Space
While the project is designed for cannabis retail, other retail tenants were also considered due to the volatility of the market. Extra security, an efficient back of house, and a flexible retail floor are universal.
Layering security provides sections where products may be separated by sensitivity, and easy restocking for seamless daily opening and closing.
A wooden element encases more hidden security curtains so product can easily be secured overnight.
